In my previous piece, titled "Opting Season-ing," I underscored the new trend of individuals prioritizing personal choices and self-care. I emphasized that leaders should approach this trend with understanding and adaptability, leading with compassion, clarity, and kindness. The essence is to understand and respect that people, given today's circumstances, are realizing they have choices that can enhance their well-being, and they're increasingly inclined to exercise them.

Now, let's pivot our attention to those making these choices - the "opters."

If you're contemplating the option to step back or detach from certain aspects of your life, it's crucial to introspect:

  • Reasons to Opt Out: If moving away from a situation or individual alleviates feelings of stress, anxiety, or pain, it might be the right choice. Especially if these circumstances have been neglectful, manipulative, or harmful, prioritizing your well-being is paramount. A fresh start might offer a revitalized perspective, potentially enriching your life beyond expectations.

However, it's worthwhile to delve deeper and ask:

  • Avoidance or Genuine Need? Are you opting out to sidestep a challenging conversation? Constructive feedback can lead to growth, both for you and for those you're distancing from. Being candid about your reasons can lead to mutual understanding.

  • Power Dynamics: Are you pulling away primarily because you aren't at the helm? If the core reason is a lack of control, you might be escaping rather than genuinely "opting out." Reflect on this differentiation.

  • Is Boredom the Culprit? If monotony drives your decision, remember that sometimes the solution isn't walking away but diving deeper. Engage more profoundly, bring new ideas, or contribute in novel ways.

  • Emotional Responses: Feeling wounded? It's a natural reaction to withdraw when hurt. However, healing often involves communication. Address the issue, seek understanding, and practice forgiveness. A fresh start can often mend wounds.

  • Peer Influence: Are you influenced by others' choices? While it's natural to be swayed by peers or even celebrities, it's pivotal to ensure your decision is rooted in personal needs and not mere imitation.

I confess, there have been instances when I've opted out, even before it became a recognized trend. Often, I acted impulsively. Today, I advocate for introspection and open dialogue. Seeking insights from trusted peers can provide a holistic perspective on decisions related to work, personal life, and other commitments. Let's aim for a balanced approach, where our choices are informed, thoughtful, and genuine, avoiding getting caught in the undertow of a passing trend.
